31st March 2010 Print

Machu Picchu, South America’s celebrated tourist attraction and one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, is set to re-open to tourists on 1 April 2010 after flooding earlier in the year forced it to close.

On the eve of its re-opening, tailor-made tour operator and retailer, Travelmood has revealed its top three tours for holiday-makers seeking to experience the iconic “Lost City”.

Lima and Machu Picchu
To showcase Peru’s highlights, Travelmood recommends a three-day “Best of Lima” experience, followed by a five-day “Cuzco and Machu Picchu” tour. Holiday-makers will enjoy the nightlife and rich culture of cosmopolitan Lima before heading to the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco, with its colonial churches and monasteries interspersed with the remains of Inca walls, arches and doorways. From Cuzco, guests will visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas before taking the train to Aguas Calientes and ascending to magnificent Machu Picchu.

Prices start from £1,699, based on a 1 May 2010 departure, and this includes two nights at the Sonesta Posadas Del Inca Miraflores in Lima, two nights at the Sonesta Posadas Del Inca Cuzco, one night at the Sonesta Posadas del Inca Yucay, a night at the Machu Picchu Inn, return economy flights from London Heathrow with Iberia Airlines and transfers. All accommodation is on a bed and breakfast basis.

Luxury Cuzco and Machu Picchu with Orient Express
For holiday-makers looking for a deluxe Machu Picchu experience, Travelmood recommends a five-day tour with Orient Express, coupled with a luxury hotel stay in Lima. The Hiram Bingham Orient Express train takes guests on a leisurely journey through the changing landscapes and spectacular vistas of the beautiful Andes, the turbulent waters of the Urubamba River and the soaring mountains surrounding Machu Picchu. Holiday-makers will spend one night in the luxurious Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel located adjacent to the sacred heritage site and where they will witness a spectacular sunrise. Finally, Travelmood suggests adding a two-night stay at the five-star Miraflores Park Hotel in Lima to the end of the trip for an exciting city experience.
