Post Office Travel Insurance and airline industrial action

21st May 2010 Print

Anyone who believes their travel plans may be disrupted by airline industrial action should check their travel insurance terms and conditions in the first instance as these do vary between providers.

In the case of industrial action, Post Office Travel Insurance will consider claims for delay, abandonment and missed departure, if customers have booked a trip and purchased their travel insurance policy prior to the industrial action being officially announced.

In the case of delay, customers who have checked in, in accordance with airline instructions, can claim if their initial outward journey or final return journey is delayed for a minimum of 12 hours.

For abandonment, Post Office Travel Insurance will consider claims where the customer has not checked in but the airline has confirmed in writing that the customer's flight will be delayed by more than 12 hours or cancelled.

Cover is available for reasonable additional travel and accommodation expenses incurred if travellers miss their flight because their transport is interrupted by industrial action - this would usually be a connecting flight.

Post Office Travel Insurance does not cover the cancellation of a flight or holiday if it is as a result of industrial action.  We would advise travellers to seek compensation from their airline/ tour operator.
