Developer gives West Malling riding centre a boost

Taylor Wimpey, which has property for sale in West Malling, Kent, has come to the aid of a riding centre for the disabled which is in need of new equipment.
The leading housebuilder has donated £300 to Leybourne Grange Riding Centre for the Disabled, which is next to its Birling Grange development of new homes in Leybourne, near West Malling. The development is an ideal alternative for those looking for houses or flats in Tonbridge.
The money will go towards the cost of a second-hand saddle for Amber, one of the 28 horses at the centre.
Yard Manager Jo Fletcher, who has worked at the centre for 19 years, was delighted to receive the donation from the housebuilder, which has a range of houses for sale in West Malling. She says: “We do not receive any funding whatsoever, so this donation is very welcome indeed.
“Our running costs are £3,000 a week and so we rely on the goodwill of people an awful lot. We do hold a few fundraising events such as an annual barn dance, race night and so on, but we don’t have a designated fundraiser, so we do count on donations and people giving up their time for free.”
Running 13,500 riding sessions a year, for both disabled and able-bodied people, the centre provides a popular service to the surrounding community. But one of the main benefits of the centre is the therapeutic benefits riding has on its users.
“The effect on the disabled riders is incredible,” says Jo.
“Riding is something completely different to what they do all week. It can be a form of therapy for some – it can have a really relaxing effect on people. And for those who need a lot of assistance because of the severity of their physical and/or mental difficulties, riding gives them a sense of independence.
“Riding is also great physiotherapy for wheelchair users as they don’t use their back muscles in a chair, but being on a horse allows them to strengthen those muscles.”
Laura Bellamy, Regional Sales Manager for Taylor Wimpey, says: “We’re delighted to be able to help Leybourne Grange Riding Centre for the Disabled, which is a huge asset to the local area.
“Being a good neighbour within the communities in which we work is a big priority for us, and we’re always pleased to be able to give something back when we can.”
Taylor Wimpey is currently selling a selection of new 2, 3 and 4 bedroom houses, plus one-bedroom apartments, at Birling Grange, located off London Road in Leybourne, near West Malling.
