Peens Gastro Bar joins fight against child hunger

For the whole of September and October, Peens Gastro Bar, which overlooks Viking Bay in Broadstairs, Kent will participate in the UK’s leading foodie campaign Fight Hunger Eat Out and invites their customers to fight hunger simply by eating out.

Each time a customer orders its slow braised Kentish rabbit in cider with chorizo and peppers from 1st September to 31st October, £1 – enough to help a farmer grow enough rice to feed their family for 4 days – will be donated to Restaurant Against Hunger’s campaign appeal.

Once seen hanging in every high street butcher in the country until the 1960s, rabbit had all but disappeared from the nation’s tables. Peens have reported a return to popularity of the sweet lean meat with delicate flavours.

“We’ve had a record-breaking summer, as well-heeled Brits have eschewed airport delays and poor exchange rates and rediscovered the attractions of a traditional English seaside holiday,” said owner Matt Peens, adding, “The Guardian, Telegraph, Independent and Sunday Times newspapers have all been waxing lyrical about Thanet in general and Broadstairs in particular, which has helped bring a more discerning type of visitor to the area.”

With the advent of fast train services from London and direct flights from Edinburgh and Manchester in to Manston Airport, Matt who is recruiting more staff, is predicting a steady flow of gastro tourists to the area taking advantage of the towns’ off-peak room rates for weekend and short-break holidays.

Supported by a multitude of culinary luminaries including Raymond Blanc, Antonio Carluccio, Giorgio Locatelli, Rick Stein and Richard Phillips, Fight Hunger Eat Out unites food lovers who are turning their passion for food into action to help malnourished children and their families worldwide.

To date, Fight Hunger Eat Out has helped raise more than £1.2 million, raising £450,000 last year alone.
