Murcia-based agent ‘wins lottery’ thanks to Paramount Pictures
Paramount Pictures has opted to construct its first Europe-based theme park at Alhama de Murcia in Mazarron. Predicted to attract up to three million tourists each year, the October 13th landmark decision will have a significant impact on both the people and prospects of the region.

Representatives for the Hollywood company are currently negotiating with the various banks and creditors who bailed out the ailing Polaris World project ‘Condado de Alhama’ and are said to have made a preliminary agreement. The site extends across 3.5 million m² and the outline option to purchase is expected to exceed 45 million euros. Murcian government representatives are also involved in the process to ensure its smooth running. Should unforeseen circumstances derail dialogue, second choice Fuente Alamo, half an hour from Camposol, could re-enter the frame – but neither side expects this.
Alhama de Murcia was always a strong contender for the Paramount Pictures theme park due to swift motorway connections and access to two international airports (Murcia San Javier at 45 min and Alicante at an hour and 15 min) with the addition of a third even closer international airport at Corvera which is visibly under construction and scheduled for opening in 2011. Meanwhile the land, adjacent to Polaris World’s Condado de Alhama, is already rezoned for construction and, given the circumstances, available at the right price.
Whilst Paramount Pictures will not be taking part as an investor in the project, they will give access to intellectual property from a vast library of films and provide branding, conceptual master planning and design for the project. The Company is responsible for many hundreds of household name films such as Grease, Crocodile Dundee, Wayne’s World, Forrest Gump, Mission Impossible, Star Trek, Lara Croft, Shrek and Transformers.
