As the eagerly awaited £100 million terminal nears completion, easyJet has announced its intention to launch a brand new route into Gibraltar Airport from Liverpool’s John Lennon. The three times a week service, to begin 29 March, will complement easyJet’s existing London Gatwick schedule and compete against Monarch Airlines’ Manchester route – also three times a week.

Brian Stevendale, Sales & Marketing Director for Ocean Village, an award-winning mixed-use marina development within literally a few hundred metres of the runway, comments, “With so much expansion underway in Gibraltar at the moment, it comes as little surprise that airlines are keen to cash-in on the Rock’s success. We are experiencing a huge influx of gaming, financial services and entertainment enterprises attracted by Gibraltar’s low-tax environment. Office space is at capacity, so much so that we are building a 15,000m² World Trade Centre to satisfy demand. With global commerce comes international travel and easyJet will have the business traveller in mind as much as the holidaymaker keen to experience Gibraltar’s unique history, culture and warm Mediterranean climate.”

easyJet’s new Liverpool route could coincide with the opening of Gibraltar’s much-needed 20,000m² two-storey terminal and three-storey car park designed to handle a more than a million passengers each year. The 2006 Cordoba Accord, which finally allowed civilian flights from all nations into Gibraltar Airport, also agreed that the facility could be shared between Spain and Gibraltar giving passengers the opportunity to leave via exits both sides of the border (similar to Basle jointly operated by France and Switzerland). Whilst the Spanish side of the works has been hampered by their economic crisis, Gibraltar pledges to deliver its part of the new terminal by mid-2011 with a road under the runway to solve current traffic tailbacks upon take-off and landing following by the end of the year.

Alongside easyJet’s London Gatwick and Liverpool routes, Monarch Airlines flies to Gibraltar from both London Luton and Manchester whilst British Airways operates a London Heathrow service. There is also growing private jet traffic to serve the business community. In addition, UK-based Lester Hotel Group has just announced its intention for a 160-room four-star hotel with gymnasium and 3,000m² of office space within striking distance of the Airport. Construction will commence in 2011.

In a very rare opportunity, a handful of high floor two and three bedroom apartments in Ocean Village’s Grand and Majestic Ocean Plazas have been released back to the market for sale. Priced to sell from just £295,000, many are fully furnished with incredible views of Gibraltar and across to Africa. The accommodation combines high spec fixtures and fittings with abundant on-site facilities from Jacuzzis to an oasis of seven swimming pools and a state-of-the-art Health Club to secure underground parking. On top, residents are able to savour all the action within Ocean Village’s confines such as the Gala Casino, fine dining in a wide range of restaurants and the ultimate in status symbols – a berth for the megayacht.
