Kitchen DIY - A recipe for disaster

Home owners are spending almost twice as much money upgrading their kitchen than any other part of the home, a study has revealed .
On average, home owners have spent £33 in every £100 of their home improvement budget on the kitchen in the last 12 months.
And whilst the research demonstrates that home owners don’t appear to have the fear factor when it comes to embarking on major DIY projects, leading housebuilder, Persimmon Homes is urging them to think twice and consider a brand new house with a beautifully fully fitted new kitchen instead.
“More than half of young people aged under 35 lack the basic DIY skills required to maintain their home, ” comments, Jon Gibbs, sales director for Persimmon Homes Anglia. He continues: “Although there are many homeowners who do enjoy DIY and have the necessary skills to update and renovate their properties, there are a significant number who don’t have the time, knowledge or experience to carry out these major tasks.”
The findings have also revealed that when homeowners sometimes attempt to do a job themselves and it goes wrong, it can cost nearly three times as much to put the problem right which makes for a false economy. The average cost of putting right a failed DIY job carried out by someone under 35 is £2,498, compared with around £838 for those aged over 45.
“At Persimmon, we invest a great deal of time and effort into designing each and every room so that it suits the most demanding of lifestyles” continues Jon. “Take our kitchens for example – the household appliances we can include as standard, such as the fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine not only look stylish but are also ‘A’ rated as standard, ensuring energy usage is kept to a minimum.
“In addition, our customers are also able to personalise each room by choosing items from our extensive Finishing Touches range. The beauty of doing this is the fact that the items can be installed before buyers move in so their dream home is exactly that from the moment they walk through the front door, eradicating the need to delve into the uncertain world of DIY.
“The tougher economic climate, along with the rising popularity of shows such as Come Dine With Me are clearly influencing people’s desire to create the perfect ambience for dining at home however, with a move into a brand new Persimmon property, it won’t only be the food on the menu that’ll be the envy of friends and family, but the stunning interior too.”
Take for example the company’s stunning properties at the Woodlands development in Barham, near Ipswich. The stunning five bedroom properties all come complete with sizeable and welcoming kitchen areas which truly live up to idea that the kitchen is the heart of the home.
With just a handful of properties remaining at Woodlands, Persimmon is urging househunters to take a look at what Woodlands has to offer before the site is completed. Prices for the properties start from £292,000 for the five bedroom Kenton design.
Woodlands is being constructed among areas of open space and mature woodland, making it a pleasant and peaceful place to call home. The development is situated close to open countryside on the outskirts of Barham.
The village centre hosts local amenities including a post office, newsagents, convenience store and a traditional English butcher, while a larger supermarket is just over three miles away. Good local schools are also found just two miles from the development.
Commuters will be pleased to note that Needham Market train station is two and half miles away, with regular trains running to Ipswich. The mainline station offers a direct link to London’s Liverpool Street Station in under an hour.
