The Penny Black Restaurant opens in Chelsea

18th May 2011 Print

Newly opened and situated in the heart of Chelsea at 212 Fulham Road, The Penny Black Restaurant offers Londoners a home away from home, where families and friends can come together to enjoy some of the nation’s favourite dishes.

Overseen by Tony Ho and Head Chef Jan Chanter, the restaurant is fast becoming the must-go-to venue in South West London for the best in British cuisine. The restaurant’s wholesome menu uses the finest locally sourced ingredients to showcase some truly British dishes, including Beef Wellington, Toad in the Hole and an utterly superb wet-roasted belly of English pork. The dessert menu is equally packed with retro and nostalgic classics such as Raspberry Baked Alaska, rice pudding and a grown-up alcoholic reincarnation of jelly and gin and tonic sorbet.  Sundays at The Penny Black Restaurant are very much a family affair where groups can enjoy whole roasted joints of meat or whole baked fish with all the trimmings, including plate-sized Yorkshire puddings.

To complement the menu, the restaurant champions over one hundred wines from across the globe, including some great award-winning English wines. The restaurant also offers its customers the exclusive service of ordering in private bottles of wine or spirits that are then expertly stored for frequent visits. A note worthy feature is that all wines, regardless of price, can be enjoyed by the glass or half-bottle carafe. In addition there is an eclectic and classic selection of cocktails such as a ‘Negroni’ and a ‘Vesper Martini’, alongside signature drinks such as ‘The Chelsea Tractor’ and the ‘1p’.

The simple but distinguished red, black and grey décor supported with original Penny Black stamp artwork by Simon Claridge creates an extremely sophisticated atmosphere. With a capacity of seventy covers across two floors and a private dining space accommodating twenty-eight people, the restaurant has already become a highly desirable venue for corporate event and private dining.

The Penny Black Restaurant team have over thirty-five years’ experience between them and have worked at some of London’s most respected bars and restaurants such as the ‘Atlantic Bar and Grill’ with Oliver Peyton and the likes of Jamie Oliver and Ben O’Donoghue at Monte’s of Chelsea. The team’s expert knowledge and dedication to supporting British produce has helped to create a unique dining experience bringing back true British hospitality to South West London.
