A tree-mendous move at Holborough Lakes

A collection of mature ‘New England’ trees up to 30 years old, have become the latest residents at Holborough Lakes in Snodland, Kent where Berkeley has begun work on the new Village Green.
The group of established Oak, Pine, Maple and Birch have all been carefully selected to complement the ‘New England’ style which has been adopted in the design of the development.
With the help of award winning landscape architects Murdoch Wickham, a variety of trees were chosen that are typical to those found in New England including the Northern Red Oak (Quercus Rubra) which is the most common of the red oak species in New England. The Silver Maple (Acer Saccharinum) is native to New England and is named after the light frosty green colour of the undersides of its leaves. Thin petioles give the tree a shimmering effect in a light breeze.
To ensure the Berkeley quality standard, each tree is over 10 years old with the Pin Oak (Quercus Palustris) averaging 30 years old, thus creating an established avenue of trees that will lead to the new green open space. Also chosen for their plethora of colours, the trees combined offer a fusion of rich colour to create a beautiful scene in the Autumn. The Red Maple (Acer Rubrum) is best known for its brilliant deep scarlet foliage, while the Himalayan Birch (Betula Jaquemontii) complements with leaves that turn golden yellow during the Autumn.
John Murdoch of Murdoch Wickham landscape architects comments: “The new village green will provide the whole community with a perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors, creating a great place for a family picnic, local event and communal activities. The introduction of the extensive range of mature trees rather than using young saplings demonstrates Berkeley’s commitment to the local area.”
The focal point of the new Village Green will be a circular grassed open space surrounded by trees, shrubs and seating areas. The avenue of trees will lead to the open space which will include a new community pavilion, marketing suite, natural play area and keep fit elements including a trim trail.
