The Grito de Independecia is celebrated in town squares across Mexico each year on 15th September, led by the president and with the people recalling the names of fallen heroes from Mexican history. In the absence of the Mexican president in London, our very own Felipe Fuentes Cruz, head chef and biggest Mexican character this side of the Rio Grande, will be leading the chant first at 7:45 and then again at 8:45 at 12 Great Castle Street.

Felipe will be making his famous Tamales and the traditional, rich Posole stew – a spicy pork and corn concoction. These essentials for any Mexican celebration will be available at all three stores as well as the usual delicious burritos, tacos and margaritas. In addition:

A Mariachi band will play from 7pm.

In this time of turmoil and unrest, we turned to the most inspirational of Mexican leaders, and our namesake, Benitos Juarez, and asked, "What would Benito do?" The resounding answer came back - he would give free cake to the people! Anyone bringing along a “Free Cake Flyer” to Benito’s Hat on New Row will be given some delicious traditional Mexican cake. Bring the flyer to 19 New Row, Covent Garden any day this week after 3pm to claim (12th to 18th September).
