Fine Wine Sale At Bonhams

16th April 2007 Print
Golf In Cyprus Bonhams’ sale of Fine Wine and Whisky at New Bond Street on 25th April is to include a very rare bottle of Johnnie Walker 1805 Scotch whisky (estimate £12,000-16,000). Only 200 bottles of this rare blend were produced in 2005 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of John Walker and have never been available for retail sale.

The sale proceeds will be donated to the National Trust for England, Wales and Scotland. The auction will also include a range of other interesting whiskies including Macallan 1938 (£700-800), Ardbeg 1965 (£1,500-2,000) and two bottles of Springbank 1973 (£600-700).

The sale will commence with old champagnes from the great vintages of the 1940s and 50s; a mixed lot of a bottle each of Krug 1964 and 1982 (£400-500) being one of the most highly prized.

A selection of Sauternes includes a case of Château Rieussec 1947 (£1,700-2,000) and twelve vintages of Chateau d’Yquem from 1960 to 2003 (£1,200-1,400 per dozen) while a Tokaji section comprises some rare bottles of ‘Ausbruch’ from 1901 (£180-240 per half-litre) and Aszu 5 Puttonyos from 1915 (£120-160 per half-litre) as well as mixed lots of more modern wines from some of the area’s top vineyards and producers.

Venerable clarets include Château Rausan-Segla 1961 (£500-600 for 5 magnums), Petrus 1961 (£1,200-1,400 per bottle) and a bottle each of Petrus 1970 and 1982 (£2,600-3,200). A further three bottles of Petrus 1982 (£3,800-4,200), a case of Château Latour 1970 (£2,400-3,000) as well as a case of Château Mouton Rothschild 1986 (£4,500-5,000) are also on offer. As usual there will be a wide range of both younger and more modestly priced Bordeaux, including some large format bottles.

Burgundies for sale include 2 bottles of Roumier’s Musigny 1982 (£1,100-1,300) and an assortment of 1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti from a collector on the Continent. A private London cellar has produced a superb range of Châteauneuf du Pape from Château de Beaucastel, Bois de Boursan and Vieux-Télégraphe, Sancerre from Cotat and 2000 Bordeaux including Château Calon-Ségur (£360-420) and Château Lynch-Bages (£650-750).

An eclectic range of Brunello di Montalcino spanning vintages from 1962 to 1987 headlines a fine Italian section, which also includes good parcels from Castello di Ama, one of Tuscany’s top estates. Top wines from Australia and California include a salmanazar of Beringer Private Reserve 1981 (£300-360) and 6 bottles of Torbreck Run Rig 2002 (£360-440). An extensive parcel of Taylor 1970 (£600-800 per dozen) is featured in the port section as well as Fonseca 1977 (£600–800 per dozen) and Cockburn 1963 (£650-750 per dozen).
