Peter Elson is sales and marketing director for Ellis Furniture, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of bathroom and kitchen furniture. In this article he explains the benefits of bathroom furniture and how we can use these clever storage solutions to create the bathroom of our dreams.

These days a house is not a home, and most certainly not a viable property, without at least one stunning bathroom. The humble bathroom has certainly come a long way over the years and is now regarded as the sanctuary of the home; a place where family members can indulge in a little rest and relaxation and some all important ‘me time’.

Certain ingredients are essential for creating the perfect bathroom, en-suite and cloakroom and clutter is a big no-no. In today's clutter free existence, every bathroom, whatever its size, must include a stylish storage solution of some description. We may not want clutter but we still need to house all those beauty products!

No matter what your style, whether contemporary or traditional, fitted or modular bathroom furniture can help you achieve a clutter free bathroom and help you maximise the space available in what is usually the smallest room of the house.

The key to the perfect bathroom is design, which can be challenging in smaller spaces. To create a more design-led look in a smaller space, you must carefully select furniture that not only offers the 'wow' factor, but functionality as well.

It stands to reason that smaller, awkward spaces require a much longer thought process in terms of furniture size and shape because space is limited, but you do not need to compromise on quality and style.

For bathrooms where space is at a minimum, furniture with a short projection is best. Wall mounted cabinets are a practical space saving solution for any sized room, but are ideal in areas with size restrictions. Mirrored cabinets provide great storage and help create the illusion of a larger room.

Other furniture solutions designed especially with en-suites and cloakrooms in mind include fitted units and cabinets with reduced depths and modular furniture in a variety of compact options. Additional features that are designed to enhance the overall look and finish of the furniture, such as soft close hinges, are also popular.

Both fitted and modular furniture can help create the illusion of more space in a bathroom, en-suite or cloakroom – not only by eliminating unsightly clutter – but in the case of modular furniture, giving more floor space, which also makes cleaning easier.

Fitted furniture ensures any bathroom has clean lines. Furniture conceals unsightly pipe work such as the soil pipe, waste pipe and hot and cold pipe work.

Modular basin units are an alternative to just offering a basin and pedestal, and extremely flexible. This gives storage and a modern look.

Wall hung furniture can create the illusion of more space in smaller bathrooms. A wall hung basin unit eliminates the need for the traditional basin and pedestal arrangement, which can reveal the ugly looking plumbing. Not only that but you also get some versatile storage space.

Ultimately, furniture gives properties a competitive edge over those that just have the traditional four-piece set of pottery; and with furniture available at many price points there is a design to suit most budgets.

Furniture also provides an exciting way to inject colour into the room, whether it is the natural colour of wood grain or dramatic colours you prefer. Today, various finishes are popular; the more traditional wood style furniture, wood grain finishes in high gloss for a striking effect and even high gloss finishes in dramatic colours, such as aubergine, azure and even black. Colour can also be added in the form of glass splashbacks and worktops.

Furniture really does help create the wow factor and it will not only improve your quality of your life and enhance your enjoyment of your bathroom, but will make the property more saleable in the future.
