Charcol.co.uk, UK online mortgage broker, has launched an online petition to make stamp duty fairer. Whilst it is unrealistic to think that stamp duty will be abolished completely the current system is both hugely unfair and significantly distorts the market around the threshold levels.

25 areas pay a quarter of all residential stamp duty revenues

More than a quarter (26%) of total residential stamp duty paid in 2006/07 came from homebuyers in just 25 (6% of the total) local authorities (LAs), according to research from Halifax, based on data from the HMRC.
