Spanair celebrates first anniversary of mobile check-in
Mobile check-in has landed in airports across Spain following the introduction of a paperless ticketing service by Spanish carrier Spanair Airlines. Paper boarding passes can now be replaced by an electronic 2D barcode received via MMS and stored by the passenger's mobile phone.
SWISS announces new Zurich-Lyon service
SWISS customers will soon enjoy non-stop connections between Zurich and Lyon. The new service of four daily frequencies will be introduced with the start of the 2009 summer schedules on 29 March, and will be operated using Avro RJ100 equipment.
TAP opens new lounge at Lisbon Airport
On December 22nd, the TAP Premium Lounge at Lisbon Airport was opened, a new ample space of 500m2 that offers passengers the most up-to-date and comfortable rest, leisure, entertainment, multimedia and Business Center area as well as providing free wireless internet access.
Qantas to remove domestic fuel surcharges
Qantas has removed its domestic fuel surcharges for tickets issued on or after Thursday 1 January 2009. Executive General Manager, Mr John Borghetti, said the airline had reduced domestic and international twice in recent months.
Qantas takes delivery of second A380
Qantas took delivery of its second A380 aircraft in Toulouse, France, last month. The aircraft arrived in Sydney on 17 December, and services between Melbourne and Los Angeles and Sydney and Los Angeles commenced on 22 December.
Austrian increases capacity on Dubai routes
Routes to the Middle East are central to Austrian Airlines Focus East strategy and have recently benefited from the introduction of the Premium Service Business Class. Among the most successful are flights to Dubai therefore Austrian Airlines will expand its seating capacity on the route from 1 March 2009.
Aer Lingus reports record online sales levels
Aer Lingus' "January Seat Sale" reached record levels this week (Tuesday 6th January), with almost 51,000 seats booked on the airlines website, aerlingus.com, in just one day. This is the highest level of online sales achieved in one day over the last twelve months. aerlingus.com also recorded an increase of 27% new visitors on the same period last year.
British Airways predicts top ten long haul hotspots for 2009
British Airways has announced its predicted top ten long haul destinations for 2009. Richard Tams, British Airways' head of UK & Ireland sales, said: "It's not all doom and gloom for travel in the current economic climate as destinations such as Dubai and the Caribbean Islands of St Kitts and St Lucia continue to experience growth and investment, so we anticipate greater numbers of customers wanting to travel there.”
easyJet slashes fares on 16 million seats
easyJet, the UK’s largest airline, today launched its biggest ever flights sale, with up to 25% off flights between 1 March and 30 June, including Easter and Half-Term, which means massive discounts on 16 million seats for early summer travel. easyJet launches 14 new routes across Europe
easyJet has announced that it is opening 14 new routes across Europe, for summer 2009. Nine of the new routes will operate from UK regional airports, giving travellers even more choice of popular destinations. Fares for the new routes will start from just £22.99 including tax.
Jet away with Flybe and just pay taxes & charges
Flybe has announced a ‘Just Pay Taxes & Charges’ promotion on a number of its most popular routes across its network to a range of destinations across the UK. The four-day only sale runs from 0800 hours on Friday 9th January to midnight on Monday 12th January for travel between 30th January and 8th April, and all passengers have to pay for their ticket are the taxes and airport charges.
Gulf Air shows commitment to Bahraini workforce
National carrier Gulf Air has reached another milestone in its ongoing ‘Bahrainisation’ efforts. The airline's financial accounting department is now fully staffed and managed by Bahrainis and is in line with the progress made a couple of months ago when the airline’s revenue accounting department became 100% Bahraini managed.
Gulf Air extends Graduate Training Programme
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain and Tamkeen (the Labour Fund) to offer 150 Bahraini students a place in the airline's Graduate Training Programme upon successful completion of their degrees.
Gulf Air upgrades its duty free shopping experience
Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, has upgraded the duty-free shopping experience for its passengers with the appointment of Duty Free Air & Ship Supply (DFASS) to run its concessions. The agreement which comes into effect on January 1, 2009 will mean customers are now able to choose from a new and expanded range of products on board.
Delta rings in New Year with fare sale
Delta Air Lines is inviting customers from coast to coast to enjoy special low fares for travel this winter and spring. The airline has launched fare sales in nearly 300 U.S. cities across the United States and Canada, including flights from its hubs in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Memphis, New York and Salt Lake City.
