Motorists who say ‘I hate speed cameras’ pay less to avoid fines
A speed camera detector that allows a motorist to spot hidden cameras is to be withdrawn from sale following the government’s plan to ban the device. In defiance to the proposed law which is likely to take effect next year, the speed camera detector supplier has announced they will immediately dispose of all remaining stock at a cut price to motorists who quote ‘I hate speed cameras’ at time of ordering.
Government says no to low carbon car fund
The Department for Transport announced on Wednesday 7 June that four new grant programmes to assist people buying eco-friendly vehicles would not be going ahead, including the Low Carbon Car fund. The European Commission Competition Authority had given approval for the UK’s Low Carbon Car grant to replace the Energy Saving Trust’s Powershift grant scheme, which was withdrawn 15 months ago. However, the decision has been made that no other financial incentives will be introduced and Keith Johnston, managing director of GoinGreen, the country’s foremost green vehicle retailer says in response: ‘This is hard to believe. Government should be seen to be encouraging the early market purchase of low and zero emission vehicles if they are going to start trying to reach the targets that they have set for reducing C02 emissions, which are actually 8.7% higher than in 1990 when the aim is for them to be 20% lower than in 1990 by 2010’.

General Motors receives eight top scores
General Motors underlined its leading position in alternative propulsion concepts with eight best performances at this year’s Michelin Challenge Bibendum (June 8 – 12, 2006). The HydroGen3, a hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle based on the Vauxhall Zafira, scored top marks three times, the Vauxhall Zafira CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and the Saab 9-5 BioPower twice, and the Saturn Vue Green Line, representing a new generation of hybrid vehicles, once. Vehicles powered by natural gas, bioethanol, hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell technology are all important parts of General Motors’ strategy for reducing emissions and fuel consumption to ensure sustainable mobility in the future.
The Peugeot 206 Van and Boxer see sales growth
The Peugeot 206 Van was the best selling small car derived van in May with a total of 276 sales, a 133.9% increase over May 2005. The strong sales performance was helped by the van being chosen by Venson Automotive Solutions as the ideal vehicle to fulfil a new contract with one of the country’s leading energy suppliers, npower. This is the largest one model order for Venson Automotive Solutions and testimony to the practical and stylish design of the 206 Van.
